Spring Cleaning in September

September 9, 2010

I am the ultimate broken record… it’s as if I spend my whole life trying to get “my life back on track”.  But alas, here I am again, trying to do just that.  During these times of getting back on track, I usually focus on my exercise/activity and my nutrition.  But I decided to take a different approach this time… I decided to attack the mundane, every day things that were staring me in the face everyday that were never completed or just not up to snuff (ie. new tires for my car, going through my junk mail, cleaning out my closet-both clothes and shoes).  I took a few days off of work, put together a game plan and got busy.  I made a list of all the errands I’ve been putting off for months and all the things around the house that needed to be done.  My list was very very long.

I’ve always been a big believer that your physical space is an extension of how you are feeling on the inside and 8 times out of 10, my apartment is a hot mess.  And if I’m ever going to find whatever it is I’m looking for to make me content, my outside space needed to match how I wanted to feel.  I wanted a clutter free, clean, neat environment to thrive in… so first item on the list was to get my house in order, literally.   I vacuumed, I mopped, I cleaned… but the ultimate game changer that occurred from getting my “house in order” took me by such surprise…

Let there be Light! My bathroom vanity mirror has had one (out of four) operable light bulb for so long that I can’t remember the last time two of the light bulbs worked let alone all four.  I just never got around to replacing them.  And I guess I grew accustomed to the dimness of the bathroom because when I replaced all 4 bulbs with new (energy efficient) light bulbs, I was like “WOAH!!!”.  I have literally been getting ready in the dark for months.  It’s amazing what a little light does to your self view.  🙂

There were some things that I didn’t get to during my 5 day sabbatical, but all in due time.  Maybe there’s another mini sabbatical in my near future!

Isn’t it funny how something as seemingly trivial as a light bulb could change your whole view of things 🙂 Somehow the less cluttered things are, and the more you purge what you don’t use anyway, brings new life and light into your space and therefore into your very being. I’m also working on spring cleaning. It’s taking longer than i thought. Best of luck too you 🙂
(oh, off topic can we get some hair photos please)

Cleaning things out is so cathartic. It’s like the shedding of skin for lizards, you’ve got to get rid of the old stuff to grow. I went through a pretty intense purging about three years ago and I felt so much better. I hate the cliche, but less was more.

i cleaned out my closet this week and it felt amazing! When my apartment is clean and clutter free, it definitely changes my mood for the better.
