Mind Your Own Damn Business

June 3, 2010

I was at a friends’ BBQ over Memorial Day weekend. For the most part, everyone was coupled off (which is not unusual for this crowd).

Later in the evening, one of their friends proceeded to ask me why I wasn’t dating anyone. Her exact words: “What’s the problem?” I told her, I don’t know… but if I did know- I’d probably be dating.   She didn’t get the hint from my sarcasm that we should change the subject… which is not surprising because she has no boundaries herself.

She kept prodding and poking.  Asking if I go out.  (answer being yes) Asking if I’ve done on-line dating. (answer being more times than I care to remember) Asking me what was wrong with Tony (the token single guy at the BBQ) to which I replied nothing except for that I said no more than 20 words to him.  And it’s not as if because we are the only two single people at this BBQ, we should automatically pair up and start dating.

Lady with no boundaries proceeded to tell me how I need to meet new people. Telling me she would introduce me to some friends she knows from her “city days”.  They’re a little older but her city friends know EVERYONE, she says.

Oh my God, I thought I was going to shoot myself… or her. It drives me crazy when strangers try to solve “your problem” when they don’t know the first damn thing about you, other than your name.

I was so pissed off and on the hour long drive back to my apartment, I realized I was still fuming. So out of anger, I created a profile on one of the bbw dating sites (with pictures and everything).  Don’t tell me I haven’t tried everything!  It seems like the best way to get me to do something I do not want to do is to piss me off.  🙂

Anyway, I know I said June 8th I would be done with on-line dating sites… but I guess I’ll give this BBW on-line dating thing a shot.  This is so out of the mainstream, I have no idea which sites are better than others.  For now, I’ll just experiment with a few that offer free trials.  But so far, I can already tell that I’m fishing in a much smaller pond that eHarmony, Match or OKCupid!

Next fear to conquer: speed dating!  I shudder at the thought… but maybe the next person who pisses me off will prompt me to give speed dating a shot!

I hate this too. I have a family friend who always asks me if I have a boyfriend yet everytime I see her. The answer is always “no”. She begins telling me about all the single males she knows and says she will give them my number. I have told her that I do not want her hooking me up with anyone but she refuses to understand. The last time I spoke with her she said that she knows a guy that lives out of state that will be visiting her family soon and she is going to bring him to my house when he gets in town. I was speechless when she told me that. I have run out of ways to politely say “No, Thanks”.

@MJ, you DEFINITELY get it. LOL… why do people think they’re being helpful when they are so not? Ah, such is life.
